Ethical Issues with Egg Freezing in the USA? A Mother’s Response to Her Daughter’s Infertility

In modern society, reproductive technologies have brought new hope to many families struggling with infertility. However, with the advancement of technology, many ethical issues have also arisen. The story of Melanie Polvin and her daughter Flavie is one such example.

Melanie is a lawyer, and her daughter Flavie always seemed different from other children. As she grew older, Flavies condition became more apparent. At the age of seven, after detailed examinations, Flavie was diagnosed with Turner syndrome. This is a congenital disorder caused by the absence or abnormality of one of the X chromosomes, leading to underdeveloped ovaries and subsequent loss of fertility. Characteristics of Turner syndrome include short stature, webbed neck, low-set ears, drooping eyelids, and varying degrees of intellectual development, often accompanied by heart and urinary system malformations.

To give Flavie more reproductive options in the future, Melanie decided to undergo egg freezing. At 36, Melanie has undergone two egg freezing procedures and plans to do one more to ensure there are enough eggs stored for Flavies future use.

This decision has sparked widespread ethical debate. Opponents argue that if Flavie uses her mothers frozen eggs to have children in the future, biologically she would be the childs half-sister, while Melanie would be both the grandmother and biological mother. This situation is not uncommon in Western countries, where mothers have carried pregnancies for infertile daughters, sisters have carried pregnancies for gay brothers, and infertile men have used their fathers sperm for IVF.

Regarding these controversies, Melanie stated that she simply wants to give her daughter an additional option and does not necessarily expect her to use the eggs. Flavie could choose to donate the eggs to others, depending entirely on her and her future partners decision.

There are also concerns about the duration of egg storage. Flavie may not need to use the eggs until ten or twenty years later. Can the frozen eggs still be viable by then? Dr. Nathan Zhang, founder of IVF USA, explained that with American egg freezing, ultra-rapid vitrification technology is used. This method quickly dehydrates the eggs and stores them in liquid nitrogen at -196°C, completing the entire process within one second, avoiding ice crystal formation and cell damage, thereby protecting the cellular structure and function of the eggs. Frozen eggs are in a state of dormancy and will not age or deteriorate, theoretically allowing for indefinite storage. The current world record is a baby born from an egg that was frozen for 14 years and 142 days, demonstrating the high reliability of American egg freezing technology.

Melanie is very firm in her choice. She stated that parents always want to help their children. If her daughter needed something else, like a kidney, she would donate without hesitation. Professor Tan, director of the McGill University Reproductive Center who performed the egg freezing procedure for Melanie, also noted that a mother donating eggs to her daughter might take time for society to accept, just as IVF technology initially faced much opposition.
