Does a High Rate of Abnormal Sperm Mean the Baby Will Have Birth Defects?
The answer is no.
In medicine, abnormal sperm morphology refers to structural abnormalities in the sperm head, midpiece, or tail. According to current international evaluation standards, as long as the proportion of normally shaped sperm meets the reference range, natural conception is still possible. Even if the percentage of abnormal sperm is relatively high, it does not mean that a future child will inevitably have birth defects.
To date, research from around the world has found no evidence of a direct causal relationship between abnormal sperm morphology and fetal birth defects. Sperm morphology mainly reflects fertilization potential rather than abnormalities in the genetic material itself.
Why Doesn't Abnormal Sperm Morphology Directly Determine Pregnancy Outcomes?
Natural conception itself is a process of continuous selection.
Although a single ejaculation contains a large number of sperm, only a very small proportion of sperm with good motility and normal function ultimately reach the fallopian tube and achieve fertilization. Many sperm with poor motility or abnormal morphology are gradually eliminated throughout this process.
Therefore, a high rate of abnormal sperm morphology is more likely to affect the chances of conception rather than directly determine whether an embryo will be healthy.
If comprehensive testing also identifies chromosomal abnormalities, severe oligoasthenospermia, or other genetic risks, physicians will recommend further evaluation to develop a more appropriate fertility plan. IVF-PGT may also be combined with embryonic genetic testing to provide additional medical information for embryo selection.
How Can Sperm Quality Be Improved?
The sperm production cycle lasts approximately 70 to 90 days, so lifestyle changes usually require time before meaningful improvements become apparent.
First, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided whenever possible. Numerous studies have shown that long-term smoking and drinking can interfere with sperm production and increase the rate of abnormal sperm morphology.
A balanced diet is also essential. Trace elements such as zinc and selenium play important roles in sperm production and maturation, and long-term nutritional deficiencies may negatively affect sperm quality.
Moderate exercise, maintaining a healthy weight, and avoiding chronic sleep deprivation can help support a healthy hormonal environment. At the same time, prolonged sitting, frequent hot baths, and long-term exposure to high temperatures should be minimized, as elevated testicular temperature may also impair sperm development.
If pregnancy has not been achieved after one year of trying, or if there has been recurrent miscarriage or multiple unsuccessful assisted reproductive treatments, both partners should undergo a comprehensive fertility evaluation rather than focusing only on female reproductive factors.
