A Discussion on IVF in the U.S.: What Does Low Ovarian Reserve Mean?

For many women, the health of their ovaries directly impacts their fertility and overall happiness. When women discover that they have low ovarian reserve, they often feel confused and anxious. Ovarian reserve refers to the number of eggs that can mature and be fertilized. As women age, their ovarian reserve gradually declines, especially between the ages of 35 and 40. By the time a woman reaches 45, her ovarian reserve is nearly zero, making pregnancy more challenging.

Throughout their reproductive years, women typically release about 400 to 500 eggs, but only a few of these will be successfully fertilized; the rest will naturally die at various stages of development. Low ovarian reserve can be caused by congenital factors or acquired factors. Genetic factors, aging, surgical procedures, disease treatments, and the use of certain medications can all impact ovarian health. The most common reason is age-related decline. The older a woman gets, the fewer eggs she has. Therefore, experts at IVF USA suggest that it is crucial for women to undergo ovarian screening before attempting natural conception. If low ovarian reserve is detected, it is important to take it seriously and consider egg freezing or IVF.

As such, timely understanding and assessment of ones ovarian function are vital. The main methods for checking ovarian reserve include ultrasound examinations, measuring follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) levels, and testing anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) levels. An ultrasound performed on days 2 to 3 of the menstrual cycle can evaluate ovarian reserve by observing the number of follicles and the condition of the ovaries. Generally, women under 35 should have 8 to 12 antral follicles in their ovaries; fewer than 8 may indicate low ovarian reserve. Additionally, changes in FSH levels can reflect ovarian function. An FSH level above 25 IU/L indicates ovarian failure, while a level below 10 IU/L suggests a good response to ovarian stimulation. AMH levels can also help assess the likelihood of natural conception; if AMH is below 0.2 ng/ml, the chances of pregnancy are low.

While women with low ovarian reserve face certain challenges, opportunities for conception still exist. Although the probability of pregnancy is relatively low, IVF technology can help women achieve their dream of becoming mothers. The IVF technology in the U.S. has significant advantages in the use of ovarian stimulation medications, the expertise of physicians, and PGS embryo diagnostics, resulting in higher success rates compared to domestic IVF.
